New Delhi, India – June 23: Following Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s comments on the Kallakurichi Hooch tragedy, Congress leader K Suresh criticized her for ignoring similar incidents in BJP-ruled states. The tragedy has claimed 56 lives so far.

Sitharaman’s Remarks

Earlier today, Sitharaman condemned the incident and questioned the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu and its ally, Congress. She expressed shock over Congress’s silence and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

Details of the Incident

The tragedy occurred in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, where 216 people were hospitalized after consuming illicit liquor. The death toll has risen to 56, with many still in critical condition. Most of the victims are from the scheduled caste.

Political Reactions

Sitharaman also criticized Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for not addressing the issue. She questioned their concern for the people of Tamil Nadu.

Current Status

According to official data, 152 male patients are alive, while 51 have died. The affected hospitals include Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry, Vilupuram Medical College, Kallakurichi Medical College, and Salem Medical College.
