Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 13: Congress leader K Muraleedharan criticized the BJP-led Central government for its decision to observe June 25, the day Emergency was declared in 1975, as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’.

Muraleedharan stated, “Indira Gandhi declared Emergency in 1975 but when the situation improved, she withdrew it and announced the election. In the election, she was defeated. And she accepted the people’s verdict.”

He added, “The situation is different now. Narendra Modi is functioning like an Emergency Prime Minister. Opposition is denied their rights and the Prime Minister is going his own way.”

Muraleedharan accused the Prime Minister of behaving like a dictator and noted that the BJP does not have an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, ruling with the help of JDU and TDP.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi responded to the opposition’s criticism, questioning the stance of INDI bloc leaders and defending the government’s move. Trivedi also criticized Indira Gandhi, stating that she was convicted of electoral malpractices by the Allahabad High Court.

Trivedi said, “In the history of India, Indira Gandhi was the only person who was convicted of electoral malpractices and electoral corruption by the Allahabad High Court. Her membership was cancelled. When she approached the SC, her membership was retained but she could not work as an MP. She could not contest elections for six years, could not participate in the proceedings of the Lok Sabha, and also could not vote. That is when she imposed an emergency… No court could now comment on or question the Prime Minister.”
