Historic Caste-Based Survey Begins in Telangana

In a significant move, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced that the Congress government in Telangana will start a long-awaited caste-based survey. This marks a ‘historic and revolutionary’ moment for the state. The survey will involve 80,000 enumerators visiting over 1.17 crore households across 33 districts.

First Survey Since 1931

This is the first time since 1931 that a caste-based survey is being conducted by the government in Telangana. Jairam Ramesh emphasized that this survey is a realization of the Telangana Movement’s aspirations and aligns with Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s ideals in the Constitution.

Blueprint for National Census

Jairam Ramesh also mentioned that this survey serves as a blueprint for a national caste census, as noted by Rahul Gandhi. The Congress party aims to lift the Supreme Court’s 50% reservation ceiling for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

Commitment to Justice

The Congress party is committed to social, political, and economic justice in India, as envisioned by the country’s founding fathers. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi attended a meeting on the caste census at the Gandhian Ideology Centre in Hyderabad.

Survey Details

Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the survey would run from November 6 to November 30, fulfilling an election promise. The Congress party views the nationwide caste census as a progressive and significant step.
