Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh Criticizes BJP Over Jammu and Kashmir Changes

New Delhi [India], July 13: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has criticized the BJP-led government for expanding the powers of the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor. He believes this move delays the possibility of Jammu and Kashmir becoming a full-fledged state again.

Ramesh mentioned that there has been a consensus among political parties that Jammu and Kashmir should regain its statehood. He noted that the Supreme Court had mandated elections for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly by September 30, 2024. He also recalled that the Prime Minister had promised to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which was reduced to a Union Territory in August 2019.

On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs amended the rules of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, giving more powers to the Lieutenant Governor. President Droupadi Murmu approved these amendments.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also criticized the government, suggesting that the move shows a lack of trust in the future elected government of Jammu and Kashmir. He questioned the rationale behind passing a no-confidence motion against a government that has not yet been elected.
