Congress Claims Government Plans to Privatize Nagarnar Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi [India], August 17: The Congress party has claimed that the Indian government has finalized plans to privatize the Nagarnar Steel Plant located in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X, stating that the government is likely to invite financial bids for the plant.

Ramesh expressed his disappointment, saying, “Kya hua tera waada, Woh kasam woh irada! It appears that NMDC Steel in Bastar will now definitely be privatized before the end of FY25.” He criticized the government for not listening to the state’s political leadership and breaking their promises.

He further explained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the plant in 2023, assuring that it belonged to the people of Bastar and would not be handed over to anyone else. Despite these assurances, the plant’s privatization seems to be moving forward.

Ramesh also mentioned that former Chief Minister Raman Singh and current Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had both written to the Prime Minister in the past, urging against the plant’s privatization. Despite these efforts, recent reports indicate that the factory is set to be privatized.

Earlier in 2023, the Congress party had called for a district-wide bandh in Bastar to protest the privatization plans.
