Congress and National Conference Discuss Seat Sharing for Jammu and Kashmir Elections

The National Conference (NC) and Congress are set to meet on Monday to resolve differences over seat sharing for the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The last day for filing nominations for the first phase is August 27.

Congress has sent KC Venugopal and senior leader Salman Khurshid to Srinagar to work out the details. Congress is demanding to contest at least 8 out of 24 seats in the first phase, while NC is offering 35 out of 90 seats. If talks do not succeed, Congress may go solo in the elections.

NC leader Nasir Aslam mentioned that everything will be clear by August 26 evening after a meeting with senior Congress leaders, including Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its first list of 15 candidates for the elections. The elections will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting on October 4. There are 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs.

In the last Assembly elections, the PDP won 28 seats, BJP 25, NC 15, and Congress 12. The PDP and BJP formed a coalition government, but it ended in 2018. These are the first elections after the abrogation of Article 370.
