Clashes in Chittagong Over Facebook Post Criticizing ISKCON

In the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh, tensions rose when a Facebook post criticizing ISKCON led to a clash between the Hindu community and law enforcement. The post, reportedly made by a local Muslim youth named Osman, called for banning ISKCON. This sparked protests from the Hindu community, resulting in a confrontation with police and army forces.

Local reporter Saifuddin Tuhin described the scene, noting that bricks and other objects were thrown at the police. A Hindu community leader mentioned allegations of acid being thrown at law enforcement. During a nighttime operation in Hazari Goly, joint forces arrested about 100 suspects, some of whom were released after questioning. A power outage during the operation obscured some details.

Reports from Bangla Daily, Prothom Alo, indicated that blank shots were fired during the operation. The incident follows recent demands by individuals and groups, including “Inqilab Manch,” to ban ISKCON in Bangladesh. ISKCON leaders in Dhaka have called for an apology from “Amar Desh” editor Mahmudur Rahman for supporting the ban.

Hindus, who constitute about 8% of Bangladesh’s population, have traditionally supported the Awami League party. The party has faced criticism following violent clashes last month. On August 5, a student-led movement resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India, and the formation of an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
