Clash Between Bangladesh Army and Hindu Protesters Over Missing Family Members
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a clash occurred on Tuesday between Bangladesh Army personnel and members of the minority Hindu community. The protesters were demanding justice for their family members who went missing during recent violence in the country. They gathered outside the Jamuna State Guest House, where interim government chief Muhammad Yunus was residing.
One protester, holding a poster of his missing son, said, “I will give my life but I want justice for my child. Where is my child? I have been going from door to door to inquire about my child but no one is listening to me.”
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a volatile political situation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid mounting protests, initially led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, which evolved into anti-government demonstrations.
Earlier in the day, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, visited the historic Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka. He assured the minorities of their safety and security, stating, “Rights are equal for everyone. We are all one people with one right. Do not make any distinctions among us. Please, assist us. Exercise patience, and later judge — what we were able to do and not. If we fail, then criticise us.”
Yunus emphasized that in their democratic aspirations, people should not be seen as Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists, but as human beings with equal rights. He pointed out that the root of all problems lies in the decay of institutional arrangements, which need to be fixed.
Following Yunus’ visit, a significant meeting was held between representatives of the Muslim community and the Hindu minority at the temple. This gathering served as a platform for open dialogue, where both communities discussed various issues and worked towards strengthening communal harmony.
