New Delhi, August 15: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized the importance of accessible and inclusive infrastructure for a modern judiciary during an event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to celebrate India’s 78th Independence Day. CJI Chandrachud, who hoisted the national flag at the Supreme Court lawns, was the Chief Guest at the event. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal attended as the Guest of Honour, alongside SCBA President and Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal.

Key Initiatives and Improvements

CJI Chandrachud highlighted several infrastructural initiatives taken in the last six months to improve the Supreme Court’s facilities. These include extending fibre optics internet to the lawyers’ block, creating consultation rooms, constructing cubicles for wait-listed lawyers, setting up a multi-facilitation centre, and renovating the SCBA office. A new lounge for women members of the Bar has also been established to enhance their ability to assist the Court and seek guidance from seniors.

Additionally, a new accessibility help desk has been set up to make the Supreme Court more accessible to persons with disabilities, women, and senior citizens. Upcoming initiatives include building bigger creches for childcare, constructing an advocates’ wellness centre, upgrading existing facilities, and air conditioning the corridors lining Court Rooms 1 to 5 and block D of the Administrative building complex.

Hackathon and Bar’s Role

CJI Chandrachud announced the second edition of the Hackathon, inviting suggestions to improve the registry’s functioning, including exploring AI-based technology solutions. He praised the Bar’s role in shaping significant constitutional and legal developments in India, emphasizing their contribution to protecting the dignity of women, gender minorities, LGBTQ+ people, and other marginalized communities.

On Independence Day, CJI Chandrachud expressed a deep sense of patriotism and indebtedness to freedom fighters. He stated that the day honors the commitment to realizing the dreams of those who sacrificed their lives for the country and those who worked to make it even better.
