Akaram ran as an independent candidate after the National Conference denied him a ticket, opting instead for a Congress candidate. He expressed confidence in his independent candidacy, citing strong public support. The National Conference-Congress alliance achieved a majority in the Jammu and Kashmir elections, securing 49 seats. The National Conference won 42 seats, while Congress took 6. Omar Abdullah, Vice-President of the National Conference, highlighted the need for the new government to engage with the union government to restore statehood to the region.

Omar Abdullah is set to become the next Chief Minister, as announced by Farooq Abdullah, though the final decision will be made by the legislators and the alliance. The BJP performed strongly, winning 29 seats, while other parties like PDP, People’s Conference, Aam Aadmi Party, and CPI(M) also secured seats. Independents won seven seats.
