China’s Military Activity Near Taiwan Increases
On October 21, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported increased military activity by China near Taiwan. By 6 am local time, 14 Chinese aircraft and 12 naval vessels were detected in the region. Seven of these aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan’s southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, Taiwan’s Armed Forces deployed Combat Air Patrol aircraft, Navy vessels, and coastal missile systems to monitor and counter the situation.
Additionally, the MND noted the passage of United States and Canadian naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait on October 20. Taiwan’s military maintained control over the sea and airspace during this transit.
Tensions Between Taiwan and China
The recent military actions are part of ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory and seeks reunification. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has reassured the public of the government’s commitment to defending Taiwan’s democracy and security. This follows China’s announcement of military drills named “Joint Sword-2024B” in the Taiwan Strait, which were described as a warning to Taiwan independence advocates.
President Lai emphasized that China has no right to represent Taiwan and that the two sides are not subordinate to each other. He criticized China’s military exercises as attempts to intimidate neighboring countries and disrupt regional peace.
