China Complains to WTO Over EU Tariffs on Electric Vehicles
Beijing [China], August 10: The Chinese government has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union’s (EU) new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). The EU has imposed additional tariffs ranging from 17.4% to 37.6% on top of an existing 10% duty on Chinese auto imports.
The EU’s decision came after concluding that Chinese automakers received large government subsidies, which they believe unfairly undermine European competitors. This move has escalated global tensions over protectionist policies related to EVs, with both the US and the EU accusing China of unfairly subsidizing its EV market.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the complaint aims to protect the development rights and interests of the EV industry and global green transformation cooperation. China argues that the EU tariffs violate WTO rules and harm the global fight against climate change.
In early July, the European Commission imposed these provisional additional tariffs on Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) makers, citing an investigation that concluded subsidies benefit the Chinese BEV value chain, posing an economic risk to EU producers.
China has urged the EU to immediately correct its actions and collaborate to protect the stability of China-EU economic and trade cooperation, as well as the electric vehicle industry and supply chains.
