China and Thailand to Hold Joint Air Force Drill ‘Eagle Strike-2024’
Chinese military aircraft and special forces are set to participate in a joint air force drill named ‘Eagle Strike-2024’ in Thailand this month. The exercise will take place at the Thai Air Force Udon Base and aims to improve combat technology and deepen cooperation between the Chinese and Thai militaries.
Over the past three decades, China has adopted a more aggressive foreign policy, including territorial claims in the South China Sea. China has also used its economic relations to develop its military power in Asia. After the 2014 coup in Thailand, the US withdrew financial aid, leading Thailand to purchase more arms from China between 2016 and 2022.
In 2017, Thailand’s previous government finalized a deal with China for three submarines worth about 13.5 billion baht (USD 367 million). However, only one submarine was delivered due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The new Thai government decided not to proceed with the remaining deal in October 2023.
