China and Pakistan’s Friendship Faces Challenges Over Security Concerns

In Islamabad, Pakistan, concerns have arisen between China and Pakistan, traditionally strong allies, due to security issues affecting Chinese nationals working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. China’s ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, expressed concerns over the safety of Chinese workers following recent violent incidents, including a suicide attack near Karachi’s airport and an attack in Besham, which resulted in Chinese casualties.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, described the ambassador’s statement as “perplexing” and a departure from usual diplomatic norms. She emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals, a sentiment echoed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Jiang Zaidong, speaking at an event celebrating China’s 75th anniversary, urged Pakistan to enhance security measures and address anti-China elements. The security of Chinese citizens is a priority for President Xi Jinping, and this issue is expected to be a key topic during President Asif Ali Zardari’s upcoming visit to China.

Pakistan has assured China of its dedication to the safety of Chinese nationals, with ongoing dialogues to address these concerns.
