Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to Swear In Justices Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as Supreme Court Judges
New Delhi [India], July 17: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will administer the oath to Justices Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as Supreme Court judges on Thursday. Their appointments were approved by the President on July 16, restoring the top court’s full strength of 34 judges, including Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
The Supreme Court Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, recommended the elevation of Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and Acting Chief of Madras High Court R Mahadevan to the Supreme Court.
Justice Singh will be the first judge from the state of Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court, providing representation to the North-East. The Collegium noted that Justice Mahadevan, who belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu, will bring diversity to the Bench. He ranked third among currently serving judges of the Madras High Court.
The two judges were recommended for elevation due to vacancies created by the retirements of Justice Aniruddha Bose on April 10, 2024, and Justice AS Bopanna on May 19, 2024.
