Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Highlights Importance of Freedom on Independence Day

New Delhi [India], August 15: Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, emphasized the importance of liberty and freedom during an event celebrating India’s 78th Independence Day in the national capital.

Speaking at the event, CJI Chandrachud said, “This is the day that reminds us of the duties we have to discharge towards each other and the nation in realizing all the values of the constitution.” He mentioned reading a piece titled ‘Songs of Freedom’ by Karnataka vocalist Chitra Sri Krishna, which beautifully captures the idea of liberty in Indian poetry.

Chandrachud highlighted that India chose the uncertainty of freedom in 1950, contrasting it with current events in Bangladesh to underscore the preciousness of liberty. He stressed the importance of understanding past struggles to appreciate freedom and liberty.

He also paid tribute to freedom fighters like Babasaheb Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others who sacrificed their legal careers for the nation’s cause. “They were instrumental not only in achieving freedom for India but also in establishing a fiercely independent judiciary,” he said.

Reflecting on his 24 years as a judge, Chandrachud noted that the work of the courts reflects the struggles of ordinary Indians. He emphasized the need for an accessible and inclusive legal infrastructure to ensure justice for all citizens.

“The ease of lawyers to navigate the court not only allows them to assist the court with ease and efficiency but also for them to feel a sense of responsibility towards the institution of the judiciary,” he added.
