Chetia Argani Durga Puja Celebrated in Kolkata

The Chetia Argani Durga Puja, a famous festival in Kolkata, was celebrated with a theme focusing on the pollution of the Ganga River. The event, held at a pandal resembling the temple city Kashi and Varanasi’s ghats, included a symbolic Shiv Mandir Ganga Aarti. The organizers aimed to raise awareness about the pollution of the Ganga, emphasizing that a polluted river leads to a polluted society.

Eco-Friendly Initiatives

The festival used eco-friendly materials to create motifs of the Ganga, involving various artisans. The theme, ‘Ganga Dhushan,’ was chosen to inspire people to protect the river. Shatabdi Das Karmakar, a committee member, highlighted the effort and resources put into the event, which took three and a half months to prepare and had a budget of Rs 60 lakh. The Kolkata police provided significant support to accommodate the large number of attendees.

Spreading Awareness

Rilina Basu, another committee member, explained that the Puja aimed to make people reflect on the importance of reducing Ganga’s pollution. The pandal depicted the purification of humans by the Ganga, while the river itself suffers from pollution. The event sought to show the consequences of increased pollution, potentially leading to the river’s drying up.

Other Celebrations

In addition to the Kolkata event, devotees offered prayers at the Maa Pateshwari Devi temple in Ayodhya and the Shri Adhya Katyayani Mandir in New Delhi during Shardiya Navratri. In Vijaywada, worshippers visited the Kanaka Durga temple, where the goddess was adorned as Saraswati during Moola Nakshatram.
