Chetan Patil Arrested for Collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue in Sindhudurg
Chetan Patil, the structural consultant of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue that collapsed in the Malvan area of Sindhudurg, has been arrested in Kolhapur, according to senior officials of Kolhapur Police. The local crime branch of Kolhapur Police arrested Patil around 12:30 am on Friday. He has been handed over to the Sindhudurg Police and will be brought to Sindhudurg today. The Sindhudurg Police also arrested a contractor involved in the case.
An FIR was registered at Sindhudurg Police Station following the collapse of the 35-foot statue on August 26. The FIR includes sections 109, 110, 125, 318, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the state government is taking swift action to reconstruct the statue. Two committees have been formed to investigate the collapse and oversee the reconstruction. Shinde urged opposition parties not to politicize the issue, emphasizing the deep reverence for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The Defence Ministry announced that a joint technical committee, headed by the Indian Navy and including representatives from the Maharashtra Government and technical experts, is being formed to investigate the damage. The statue was unveiled on December 4 last year during Navy Day celebrations in Sindhudurg, honoring the legacy of the Maratha Navy and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
