Chennaiyin FC’s Journey in ISL: New Players and Challenges Ahead

Chennaiyin FC (CFC) has been one of the most consistent teams in the Indian Super League (ISL), reaching the ISL Cup final three times and qualifying for the knockout stages in five seasons. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons from 2020-21 to 2022-23, CFC made it to the knockout stages last season by finishing sixth.

Under head coach Owen Coyle, who previously led them to the final in 2019-20, CFC is on an upward trajectory. Despite a challenging pre-season, Coyle remains optimistic as his teams are known to improve as the season progresses. CFC has seen significant changes with 15 players leaving and 12 new ones joining, including key signings like Daniel Chima Chukwu, Wilmar Jordan Gil, Elsinho, Lukas Brambilla, Mandar Rao Dessai, and Kiyan Nassiri.

The team has retained important players like Samik Mitra, Connor Shields, Jitshwor Singh, and Ryan Edwards, providing continuity. With proven strikers Chukwu and Gil, CFC aims to add more goals to their tally. The season starts with three away games, including a tough match against Odisha FC, followed by their first home game against newly-promoted Mohammedan SC and a year-end clash with rivals Bengaluru FC.
