Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 29: Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring back the remains of Netaji from Japan’s Renkoji temple by August 18, which marks Netaji’s death anniversary.

Chandra Kumar Bose stated, “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose sacrificed his life on August 18, 1945, for the freedom of our nation. His remains are kept in Japan’s Renkoji temple. There was an appeal on behalf of the nation that his remains should be brought to India, as Netaji wanted to come back to an independent India but he could not because he died.”

He also mentioned that Netaji’s daughter, Anita Bose Pfaff, wishes to perform his last rites according to Hindu tradition. “Netaji’s only daughter, Anita Bose Pfaff, has written to the Prime Minister that it is time to pay homage and respect to our father, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His remains should come back to India and she would perform the last rites. This is her desire,” he added.

Chandra Kumar Bose highlighted that the NDA government had started the declassification process of secret documents related to Netaji, which revealed 11 inquiry reports. Out of these, 10 confirmed that Netaji died on August 18, 1945, and his remains are kept in the Renkoji temple in Japan. Only one report suggested otherwise.

He expressed his belief that it is a “dishonour” for Netaji’s remains to be kept in Japan and urged the Prime Minister to bring them back to India. He also mentioned that the Renkoji temple authority is willing to hand over the remains to the Indian government.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was an Indian freedom fighter born in Cuttack, Odisha, on January 23, 1897. He established the Azad Hind Fauj and is celebrated every year on his birth anniversary, Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti. While there is controversy over his death in a plane crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945, the Central government confirmed in 2017 that he had died in the incident.
