Challenges and Hopes for Konkan’s Cashew Industry
Introduction
The Konkan region, known for its beautiful coastline and rich agriculture, is famous for producing high-quality cashews. These cashews, grown in Maharashtra and Goa, are loved for their creamy texture and sweet, buttery flavor. They are also packed with nutrients like healthy fats, protein, and essential minerals.
Processing Challenges
Despite the demand, cashew processing in Konkan faces many challenges. Akshay Gurav, a cashew processing unit owner in Kankavli, explains that processing involves several steps like drying, boiling, cutting, and grading, taking up to six days per batch. The industry struggles with fluctuating raw material costs, a shrinking labor pool, and limited supply of raw cashews.
Economic and Labor Issues
Gurav highlights that the cost of local cashews is high compared to imported ones, making it hard for local processors. Although government subsidies exist, they are often delayed, causing financial strain. Many factories have closed due to these challenges.
Worker’s Perspective
Ragini Ramchandra, a worker, shares the difficulties faced during processing, such as smoke causing health issues and stains from handling cashews. Despite these hardships, there are limited job opportunities, so workers continue in this field.
Future Hopes
Both Gurav and Ramchandra hope for more government support, such as encouraging farmers to plant more cashew trees and reducing GST on cashews. They believe these measures could help the industry thrive again, securing livelihoods and maintaining Konkan’s reputation as a top cashew producer.
