CEC Rajiv Kumar Prepares for Elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir
The Election Commission of India is getting ready to conduct assembly elections in Haryana and the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and SS Sandhu, reviewed the poll preparations for the upcoming Assembly Elections in Haryana at Chandigarh.
The term of the State Assembly in Haryana will end on November 3, 2024, and elections are planned for 90 legislative assembly constituencies. During a two-day review visit, representatives from various political parties, including Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress, Indian National Lok Dal, and Jannayak Janta Party, met with the Commission. They discussed issues like ensuring free and fair elections, updating the electoral roll, and improving facilities for elderly and women voters.
The Commission assured that it is committed to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections. Political parties were encouraged to participate in the ongoing Special Summary Revision process to update the electoral rolls. The final electoral roll will be published on August 27, 2024.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission will meet with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla to review the security situation. The Supreme Court has directed the central government to conclude the election process in the Union territory by September 30, 2024. If elections are held before September, it will be the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in 10 years.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the commission is committed to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible. He stated that no forces can derail the electoral process and that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will respond to any disruptive forces.
Along with Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand will also undergo assembly polls by the end of the year.
