CBI to Investigate Trainee Doctor’s Death in Kolkata: Protests Continue

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will send a medical and forensic team from Delhi to Kolkata after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and death of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Court has instructed the Kolkata Police to hand over all documents to the CBI immediately.

A protesting doctor expressed relief, saying, “We are very happy and relieved that the case has been transferred to CBI. The accused will be arrested soon now.”

Political Reactions

Following the High Court’s decision, opposition parties targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s state government, demanding her resignation along with other officials. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the decision and called for the resignation of the health minister and the chief minister, alleging their involvement.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda criticized the Trinamool government, expressing concern over increasing atrocities against women in the state. He welcomed the High Court’s decision, condemning the incident and the government’s handling of it.

Protests and Demands

Doctors and medical students announced that they will continue their protests until their demands are met, including the installation of CCTV cameras, proper security measures, and compensation for the victim’s parents. Dr. Lahari Sarkar, a resident doctor, stated that while they support the CBI investigation, protests will continue until justice is served.

Emergency services at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital will continue, but OPD services will remain suspended.

Background

The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered. Protests have erupted across various regions, including Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, and Rajasthan.

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court asked the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, to submit a leave application following his resignation amid the controversy.
