The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case involving the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants who drowned in a basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. This decision came after the Delhi High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted by the Delhi Police.

Details of the Case

A senior CBI official confirmed that the agency has registered an FIR and received all investigation documents from the Delhi Police. The CBI team will soon visit the incident site for a detailed investigation.

Legal Proceedings

On August 2, the Delhi High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Principal District and Session Judge Anuj Bajaj Chandana issued a notice to the CBI, requesting a status report on the case transfer. The accused, four co-owners of the basement, were arrested on July 28 and have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Supreme Court’s Concern

On August 5, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of safety issues in coaching centres. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan described these centres as ‘death chambers’ and suggested that they should operate online until they comply with fire and safety norms.

The court emphasized that recent incidents, like the one in Old Rajinder Nagar, are alarming and called for immediate action to ensure the safety of students.
