CBI Questions Doctors in RG Kar Hospital Case: Nationwide Protests Erupt

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Crime Branch in Kolkata has summoned five doctors and hospital staff for questioning in connection with the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities.

Earlier today, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate sharply criticized the West Bengal government over the recent rape and murder of a female trainee doctor, questioning why the local administration allegedly attempted to cover up the crime. Speaking out on Thursday, the Congress leader condemned the violence that erupted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata after the incident and expressed anguish over the administration’s handling of the situation.

“The incident was extremely unfortunate. What happened to the woman doctor raises a critical question: Where is the safety for women, who constitute half the population? What is happening to women in this country? Why did the local administration try to cover up the crime? The violence we saw yesterday is unacceptable and it is not the answer to anything,” Shrinate, the chairperson of social media and digital platforms in Congress’ communication department, said.

On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) expedite the process and ensure the hanging of the guilty by Sunday, August 18. She also urged the completion of the entire probe by the same date.

On Wednesday night, a mob entered the RG Kar hospital campus and vandalized the protesting site, vehicles, and public property, forcing security officials to disperse the mob. The incident that took place on August 9 has sparked widespread outrage and led to protests within and beyond the medical community.
