CBI Investigates GST Officers in Hyderabad for Bribery and Arrests Bank Fraud Offender

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken action against two officers from the GST Commissionerate in Hyderabad. These officers, a Superintendent and an Inspector, are accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakhs from a complainant. The officers allegedly threatened to impose Goods & Services Tax (GST) on the complainant and seized his iron scrap shop, demanding the bribe to release it.

According to the CBI, the incident occurred on July 4, 2023, and the officers further demanded an additional Rs 3 lakhs to open the seized premises. The CBI conducted searches in Hyderabad, recovering incriminating documents, and the investigation is ongoing.

In a separate case, the CBI arrested V. Chalapathi Rao, a Proclaimed Offender, on August 4, 2023. Rao was involved in a bank fraud case dating back to 2002, where he allegedly cheated the State Bank of India (SBI) out of Rs 50 lakh using fabricated documents. Rao had been missing since 2004 and was declared a Proclaimed Offender in 2013. He was recently apprehended after frequently changing his identity and locations.
