CBI Investigates Extortion Racket in Delhi Prisons After Sukesh Chandrasekar’s Petition

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started a preliminary inquiry into allegations that an extortion racket is being run from Tihar and other prisons in Delhi. This investigation began after Sukesh Chandrasekar filed a petition seeking a direction for the CBI to register an FIR.

Justice Amit Sharma noted on July 19, 2024, that the CBI had filed a status report. The court has scheduled a hearing for November 18, 2024. Sukesh Chandrasekar had alleged that senior officials extorted Rs 12.50 crores from him between December 2019 and June 2022. He also claimed that he was threatened with death in prison.

The CBI’s status report was filed in response to Chandrasekar’s 2022 petition. The report mentioned that the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Delhi police is also investigating the matter. The High Court had previously directed the CBI to file an updated status report, which was submitted on July 19, 2024.
