Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Faces Calls for Resignation Amidst Party Tensions

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Faces Internal Pressure

In Ottawa, Canada, on October 24, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced increasing calls for his resignation from within his own Liberal Party. During a closed-door meeting on Parliament Hill, Liberal MPs expressed their dissatisfaction with Trudeau’s leadership. This meeting was part of the regular caucus sessions held while the House of Commons is in session.

Ultimatum for Resignation

Trudeau has been given an ultimatum by dissenting MPs to decide his future by October 28. A document presented during the meeting argued for his resignation, suggesting that the Liberal Party could see a resurgence similar to the Democrats in the US after President Joe Biden chose not to run for re-election. British Columbia MP Patrick Weiler was among those advocating for Trudeau’s step down.

Mixed Reactions Among MPs

During the three-hour meeting, about 20 MPs, none of whom were cabinet ministers, urged Trudeau to resign before the next election. However, some MPs also voiced their support for him. Immigration Minister Marc Miller acknowledged the frustrations but emphasized that the situation was not critical, stating, “The prime minister can sure as hell handle the truth.”

India-Canada Tensions

The political rift in Canada has been exacerbated by tensions with India. Relations soured after Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, claims India has denied. The diplomatic row intensified when Canada labeled India’s diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation of Nijjar’s death.
