Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Discusses Foreign Interference Bill and Intelligence Handling

In Ottawa, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau testified at the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference (PIFI), affirming the necessity of a bill to combat foreign interference. Trudeau, the final witness, mentioned he hadn’t seen certain intelligence documents, like a 2021 CSIS paper on Chinese targeting of Canadian Parliamentarians. Former CSIS director David Vigneault believed Trudeau should have seen it. However, Trudeau trusted the National Security and Intelligence Advisor’s decision to withhold it, stating it didn’t add significantly to his understanding. He noted that diplomats categorizing MPs is common globally. Meanwhile, the UK is in contact with Canada regarding the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar case, emphasizing India’s cooperation as crucial.
