Canadian Expert Joe Adam George Discusses India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions and Khalistan Movement

In a recent discussion, Canadian security expert Joe Adam George addressed the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, focusing on the Khalistan movement. George explained that the movement does not pose a direct threat to Western nations, which is why these countries often dismiss India’s concerns about Khalistani extremism. He highlighted a misunderstanding by the Canadian government, which tends to conflate all Sikhs with Khalistanis.

The diplomatic row intensified when Canada labeled India’s High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death. In response, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats. India has accused Canada of not acting against extremist elements for political reasons, with 26 extradition requests pending for over a decade.

George also referenced a UK government-commissioned Bloom Review report, which revealed that Khalistani activists in the UK exploit government ignorance, intimidate Sikhs, and recruit youth. The report urged the British government to protect Sikh communities from these activists. However, George criticized the Canadian government for not addressing these issues due to partisan interests.

He noted that many Canadians are unaware of the 1985 Air India bombing, Canada’s worst terror attack, which contributes to the government’s lack of seriousness about the Khalistani issue. George contrasted the US and Canadian approaches, praising the US for its professional handling of the situation, recognizing India as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

Despite tensions, the US-India relationship remains strong, with ongoing collaboration in various areas. George advised both India and Canada to adopt a cautious approach, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations due to the significant Indian diaspora in Canada and the economic benefits Canada receives from Indian students.
