Cameron Green to Miss Major Cricket Events Due to Back Surgery

Australian cricketer Cameron Green is facing a significant break from the sport as he prepares for surgery on his lower spine. This decision comes after Green was diagnosed with his fifth stress fracture in his lower back. The surgery will prevent him from participating in the Border Gavaskar Trophy against India, starting November 22, and potentially other major events like Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in February and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

The 25-year-old experienced back pain during Australia’s UK tour in September, leading to scans that confirmed the stress fracture. Stress fractures are common among fast bowlers, with players like James Pattinson and Jasprit Bumrah having similar issues. However, Cricket Australia noted that Green’s case involves a unique defect contributing to his injury.

Green has a history of stress fractures dating back to his junior cricket days. The surgery, performed by New Zealand surgeons Grahame Inglis and Rowan Schouten, has a high success rate, with 24 out of 26 patients returning to fitness. Other cricketers like Jason Behrendorff and Ben Dwarshuis have undergone similar procedures and returned to play after recovery periods.
