Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a solar-powered reactor that transforms carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial sources or the air into sustainable fuels. This innovative system also converts plastic waste into valuable chemicals using only solar energy. The reactor converts CO2 into syngas, a key component for liquid fuels, and plastic bottles into glycolic acid, used in cosmetics.

Professor Erwin Reisner’s team, from the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, has been working on creating net-zero carbon fuels inspired by photosynthesis. Their technology captures CO2 from industrial exhaust or directly from the air, overcoming the challenge of converting diluted CO2. The system uses a photocathode and an anode to convert CO2 and plastics into fuel and chemicals.

Dr. Motiar Rahaman and Dr. Sayan Kar, co-first authors, explained that the system uses plastic waste to donate electrons to CO2, breaking down plastic into glycolic acid and converting CO2 into syngas. This process eliminates the need for fossil fuels, offering a sustainable alternative to carbon capture and storage (CCS).

The research, supported by various institutions, aims to demonstrate the benefits of combining direct air capture with CO2 utilization for a zero-carbon future. The team is working on improving the system’s efficiency and practicality.
