Calcutta High Court Questions Sandip Ghosh’s New Appointment Amid Protests
The Calcutta High Court has asked Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, to submit a leave application by 3 pm on Tuesday. This request follows Ghosh’s appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, which triggered protests.
Ghosh resigned from RG Kar Medical College on Monday, citing defamation on social media after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital. The Chief Justice division bench questioned his new appointment, asking, “How can the principal – who resigned by taking moral responsibility, be appointed as the principal of another government college?”
The court directed the state government to file the case diary and produce Ghosh’s resignation and appointment letters. The court also emphasized the need to record Ghosh’s statement.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the immediate arrest of the accused and mentioned that if the police cannot solve the case by Sunday, it will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, with investigations confirming rape and murder.
