CAG Inaugurates India’s First ‘Chadwick House’ Museum in Shimla

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has opened the ‘Chadwick House: Navigating Audit Heritage’ Museum in Shimla. This museum celebrates the rich history and contributions of the CAG to India’s governance.

Historical Significance of Chadwick House

Chadwick House is a notable landmark in Shimla. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here in 1946 during his visit for the Cabinet Mission. In 1950, it became a training school for the Indian Audit and Accounts Service. However, it fell into disrepair and was nearly demolished in 2018. The Supreme Audit Institution of India saved it by signing an MoU with Prasar Bharati in December 2020.

Features of the Museum

The museum has ten galleries that explore different aspects of the CAG’s history. It includes graphic panels, videos, diorama sets, interactive displays, and artefacts. Visitors can see historical documents, memorabilia, and photographic displays. The museum also has digital archives, audio-visual presentations, and interactive kiosks for an immersive experience.

Inaugural Address by Shri Girish Chandra Murmu

During the inauguration, Shri Girish Chandra Murmu highlighted the museum’s role as a knowledge repository and inspiration for future auditors. He expressed joy that the museum effectively captures the CAG’s journey and contributions to good governance.

Public Access

The museum is now open to the public, inviting visitors to learn about the legacy and ongoing journey of the CAG. It houses artefacts like Remington typewriters, British-era franking machines, clocks, and trophies from CAG’s field offices.

The inauguration was attended by members of the CAG’s Audit Advisory Board, senior state government officers, and other distinguished guests.
