In Madhya Pradesh, India, by-elections are taking place for two assembly seats: Budhni in Sehore district and Vijaypur in Sheopur district. As of 1 PM, voter turnout was recorded at 51.16% in Budhni and 54.86% in Vijaypur, according to the Election Commission of India. Earlier in the day, turnout was lower, with Budhni at 36% and Vijaypur at 38.26% by 11 AM.

The Budhni seat became vacant after Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a senior BJP leader and Union Agriculture Minister, was elected as a Member of Parliament from Vidisha. BJP’s Ramakant Bhargava and Congress’s Rajkumar Patel are contesting for this seat.

In Vijaypur, the seat was vacated when Ramniwas Rawat, the former Congress MLA, joined the BJP. Rawat is now contesting as a BJP candidate, while Congress has fielded Mukesh Malhotra. Rawat, who is also the Forest and Environment Minister, voted at a local school and encouraged others to vote, emphasizing priorities like irrigation, healthcare, and employment.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav urged voters to exercise their rights, highlighting the importance of voting in a democracy. He mentioned the government’s efforts in development and aspirations to make Madhya Pradesh a leading state in India.

Voting will continue until 6 PM, with results to be announced on November 23.
