Background

The Budhni seat became vacant after Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a senior BJP leader and Union Agriculture Minister, was elected as a Member of Parliament from Vidisha. The Vijaypur seat was vacated when Ramniwas Rawat, a six-time Congress MLA, joined the BJP and became the Forest and Environment Minister in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s cabinet.
