Malda (West Bengal), August 12 – A Bangladeshi smuggler was killed by the Border Security Force (BSF) in self-defense along the India-Bangladesh border in Malda district. The incident occurred on the night of August 11-12 when a group of smugglers attacked BSF troops from the Chandnichak Border Outpost.

Details of the Incident

The deceased smuggler, identified as Abdullah from Rishipara village in Bangladesh, had crossed into India to smuggle bidi leaves. The BSF stated that the smugglers attacked with sharp weapons, prompting the jawans to fire in self-defense, resulting in Abdullah’s death.

Smugglers’ Attack

During the second shift at the Chandnichak Border Outpost, a jawan observed individuals moving goods towards Bangladesh. When challenged, the smugglers attacked with sharp weapons, forcing the jawan to fire in self-defense. Despite the gunfire, the smugglers continued their attempt but eventually fled.

Search and Recovery

The company commander and jawans searched the area, recovering six bundles of bidi leaves and finding Abdullah injured. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. The BSF recovered sharp weapons and contraband items from the area.

Ongoing Challenges

The BSF reported similar attacks by smugglers in other border areas, including Berhampur, Malda, and North 24 Parganas. Despite meetings with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), no concrete action has been taken to prevent these attacks.
