BSF Catches Biplab Shill Smuggling Contraband to Bangladesh Amid Political Unrest

The Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended Biplab Shill, an Indian national, for allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband items into Bangladesh from the Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Shill, 34, was arrested on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

During the search, BSF personnel recovered 41 bottles of Phensedyl and 53 bottles of MK Dyl from his possession. According to a BSF press release, the arrest took place at approximately 11:35 PM, based on a tip-off. The operation was conducted by troops of BOP Dakuhara of the 164 Battalion BSF under the Raiganj Sector of the North Bengal Frontier.

In addition to Shill’s arrest, anti-smuggling operations conducted by the BSF North Bengal Frontier from August 10-11 led to the seizure of 10 cattle, 177 bottles of Phensedyl, and other contraband items valued at Rs 2,14,904. These measures prevented the items from being smuggled across the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Meanwhile, the BSF has intensified security measures along the Indo-Bangladesh border due to the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh. The crisis escalated after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5, 2024, amid mounting protests. The protests began in early July over demands to reform the quota system for civil service jobs, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of 1971 war veterans. The unrest intensified with students opposing a new policy allocating government jobs to descendants of freedom fighters, leading to violence in Dhaka.
