Britannia Industries Stays in West Bengal: Dr. Amit Mitra Clarifies

The West Bengal government has confirmed that Britannia Industries Limited, a major FMCG brand, is not planning to leave the state and remains fully committed to its operations there. This announcement was made by Dr. Amit Mitra, Principal Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a press conference at the State Secretariat in Nabanna.

Dr. Mitra stated that he had spoken with Varun Berry, the Managing Director of Britannia Industries, who assured him of the company’s commitment to West Bengal. Dr. Mitra emphasized, “There’s a complete falsehood being stated not only on social media but also in some mainstream media that Britannia has run away from the state. The Managing Director of Britannia called and said that they are fully committed to West Bengal. They are producing between Rs 1,000-1,200 crore worth of products in the state, which will continue.”

This clarification comes after a political controversy arose due to the shutdown of Britannia’s Taratala plant. On June 24, Amit Malviya, in-charge of BJP’s National Information & Technology Dept and co-incharge of West Bengal, tweeted about the factory’s closure. He criticized the situation, linking it to broader issues in Bengal, such as unemployment and alleged extortion by the TMC. Malviya ended his tweet with the hashtag “AntiBengalMamata”.
