Brinda Karat Praises Atishi as New Delhi Chief Minister Amid Controversy

Brinda Karat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) praised Atishi’s appointment as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, highlighting the importance of female representation and expressing hope that Atishi would address the concerns of the city’s poor and work towards justice.

However, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Virendraa Sachdeva criticized the appointment, alleging that Atishi’s parents had signed a mercy petition for Afzal Guru, the 2001 Parliament attack convict. Sachdeva claimed that an ‘anti-national government’ would now run Delhi.

Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi Chief Minister, and Atishi, the newly-elected legislative party leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has staked claim to form the new government. Kejriwal resigned after being released on bail in the Delhi excise policy case, with conditions imposed by the apex court.

AAP leader Gopal Rai stated that the new government would continue Kejriwal’s initiatives for Delhi’s residents. The current term of the Delhi Assembly will end on February 11, 2025, with the next assembly elections expected to be held later this year.
