Brazil Suspends Elon Musk’s X (Formerly Twitter) Nationwide

Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal or STF) of Brazil has ordered the immediate suspension of X, formerly known as Twitter, across the country. This decision came after Elon Musk failed to appoint a legal representative for X in Brazil within 24 hours, as demanded by the STF on August 29.

The STF had warned that non-compliance would result in the suspension of the social network’s operations in Brazil. The suspension will continue until the court’s judicial decisions are complied with and the fines are paid. The order will also remain in effect until a representative of the company is appointed in the country.

The president of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), Carlos Manuel Baigorri, has been instructed to take all necessary measures to ensure the suspension. Additionally, Apple and Google are required to block the use of the application on iOS and Android systems and remove it from their virtual stores.

Justice Moraes stated that the STF made every effort to allow X Brasil to comply with the court orders and pay the fines, but the company failed to do so. The decision also imposes a daily fine of BRL 50,000 for individuals and companies that use technological means to bypass the suspension, along with other possible civil and criminal sanctions.
