Brave Police Officers and Firefighters Honored on Independence Day

The Union Home Ministry has announced that 1,037 police personnel, fire service members, home guards, civil defence personnel, and correctional services staff will be awarded gallantry and service medals on Independence Day.

Gallantry Medals

The President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Medal for Gallantry (GM) are awarded for acts of bravery in saving lives, preventing crime, or arresting criminals. Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah of Telangana Police will receive the PMG for his bravery during a robbery on July 25, 2022. Despite being severely injured, he managed to apprehend the attackers.

Out of the 213 Gallantry Medals awarded, 208 will go to police personnel from various states and central forces, including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Telangana, CRPF, SSB, CISF, and BSF.

Service Medals

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) recognize valuable and devoted service. Out of 94 PSMs, 75 will go to police service, 8 to fire service, 8 to civil defence and home guard service, and 3 to correctional service. Out of 729 MSMs, 624 will go to police service, 47 to fire service, 47 to civil defence and home guard service, and 11 to correctional service.

Civil defence -: Civil defence involves preparing and protecting people and property during emergencies like wars or natural disasters.

Correctional services -: Correctional services are responsible for managing prisons and rehabilitating people who have committed crimes.

Distinguished and Meritorious Service Medals -: These are awards given to people who have done an excellent job in their work over a long period of time.
