Bombay High Court Questions Police Encounter of Akshay Shinde

The Bombay High Court has raised serious concerns over the police encounter of Akshay Shinde, who was accused of sexual assault. Justice Chavan expressed doubts about the incident, stating, “It is difficult to believe this. Prima facie there seem to be issues.” He questioned how Shinde, a common man, could have fired a pistol, noting that it requires strength and is not easy to unlock quickly.

Shinde’s father, Anna Shinde, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court demanding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged encounter of his son. The petition, filed through advocate Amit Katranware, alleges that Shinde was killed in a fake encounter.

The court has directed that all case papers be immediately handed over to the state CID, which will conduct a probe into Shinde’s death. The court questioned, “Why are the files not handed over to the CID yet?” While not raising any suspicion at this stage, the court found it hard to believe that Shinde managed to seize a pistol from a police officer and open fire.

Akshay Shinde, a 23-year-old former school janitor, was arrested on August 17, five days after allegedly sexually abusing two girls in a school toilet. He was being brought from Taloja Central Jail to the Thane Crime Branch office under transit remand when he reportedly opened fire on the police with their revolver near the Mumbra bypass. According to Thane Police, Shinde snatched the weapon from a police official during a bid to escape custody and was subsequently taken to a hospital where he died.

Shinde’s body was transferred from Kalwa Civic Hospital in Thane to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem. His death has sparked controversy between the ruling Mahayuti government and the opposition in Maharashtra, which is heading for Assembly polls later this year. The next hearing in this case is set for October 3.
