Bombay High Court Calls for Gender Equality Education for Boys in Badlapur Case

The Bombay High Court stressed the importance of teaching boys about gender equality from a young age during a hearing on the Badlapur sexual assault case. The court took notice of the alleged assault of two girls at a school in Badlapur and criticized the initial police investigation.

Need for Change

Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan highlighted the ongoing issue of male dominance and chauvinism in society. They suggested forming a committee to study the issue and recommend guidelines for schools to prevent such incidents.

Police Investigation Criticized

The court expressed displeasure over the Badlapur Police’s handling of the case, noting that the police showed a lack of sensitivity. The court pointed out that the police failed to record statements at the victims’ homes, leading to a serious lapse in the investigation. Maharashtra Advocate General Birendra Saraf admitted the lapse, and three police officers were suspended.

Future Steps

The court will hear the case again on September 3 and expects the government to propose the committee by that date. The committee should include a retired judge, a retired police officer, a retired principal, a woman IPS officer, and a member of the Child Welfare Committee.

Background of the Case

The alleged sexual assault of two fourth-grade girls at a school in Badlapur sparked outrage. On August 17, police arrested a school attendant for allegedly abusing the girls. The state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
