Bolivia Joins South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ
Sucre, Bolivia – Bolivia has officially joined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing “genocidal acts” in violation of the Genocide Convention. Bolivia applied to intervene on October 8, joining countries like Colombia, Libya, Spain, Mexico, Palestine, Nicaragua, and Turkey in the case.
Last November, Bolivia severed diplomatic ties with Israel due to the conflict in Gaza. The Minister of the Presidency, Maria Nela Prada, announced humanitarian aid for Gaza, while Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani condemned Israel’s military actions in the region.
In January, the ICJ ruled that Israel must prevent genocide in Gaza and allow UN investigators access. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the ruling as “outrageous.” South Africa has repeatedly returned to the ICJ, urging emergency measures to address Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, but Israel has ignored these rulings.
Bolivia’s submission to the ICJ emphasized its responsibility to condemn genocide. The conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7 last year, has resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and significant military actions against Hamas and Hezbollah. Civilians have been heavily affected, with the UN reporting over 40,000 deaths in Gaza.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, highlighted the ongoing suffering in Gaza on the war’s first anniversary.
