BJP’s RP Singh Talks About Changes in Jammu and Kashmir Ahead of Elections
Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 8: BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh shared that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has changed significantly. He noted that everyone is now hoisting the Indian flag, the Tiranga, at their homes in the Union Territory.
RP Singh recalled how the Omar Abdullah-led government stopped BJP leaders from hoisting the flag at Lal Chowk in 2011. He mentioned that in 2006, the Pakistan flag was hoisted in Lal Chowk, and in 2008, the BJP decided to hoist the Tiranga there. During a Tiranga Yatra in 2011, leaders like Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, and Anurag Thakur were arrested, and Singh himself was beaten for four hours at Munshi Bagh Ram police station.
Singh highlighted that the situation has improved over the last few years, with no incidents of stone-pelting reported in the last two years. He also criticized National Conference Vice-president Omar Abdullah for his remarks on the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
The Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with counting on October 8. There are 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs. The National Conference and the Congress have formed a pre-poll alliance. According to the Election Commission of India, there are 88.06 lakh eligible voters in Jammu and Kashmir. These are the first assembly elections after the abrogation of Article 370. In the previous elections, the PDP won 28 seats, BJP secured 25, NC won 15, and Congress won 12.
