BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative. He believes this decision will strengthen nation-building and federalism in India.

Reclaiming Constitutional Spirit

Kesavan emphasized that the initiative would reclaim the original spirit and sanctity of the Constitution, as envisioned by Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar and other architects. He mentioned that the abrogation of Article 370 by PM Modi also re-established the Constitution’s original ideals, which he claims were betrayed by Congress.

Historical Context

Kesavan pointed out that simultaneous polls were always intended by the Constitution’s architects. However, he criticized Indira Gandhi’s Congress for toppling elected state governments 39 times between 1952 and 1967, disrupting the cycle of simultaneous elections. He also mentioned the dissolution of the Lok Sabha in 1970 and the Emergency period as attacks on the Constitution by Congress.

Support and Benefits

According to Kesavan, the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative is a progressive move supported by over 32 parties, including several opposition parties. He believes it will bring political stability, save public money, increase voter turnout, and reduce corruption and black money.

Government Approval

The Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which includes simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, as well as urban body and panchayat polls within 100 days. A High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year.
