BJP Withdraws First Candidate List for Jammu and Kashmir Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to withdraw its initial list of 44 candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections. The party announced that the list will be released again after some amendments.

Earlier, the BJP had announced candidates including Syed Wazahat from Anantnag, Kuldeep Raj Dubey from Reasi, and Gajay Singh Rana from Doda. Other candidates were Arshid Bhat from Rajpora and Sushri Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar, among others.

The list was released after a meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee chaired by JP Nadda, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah also in attendance.

The elections will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4. Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs. There are 88.06 lakh eligible voters in the region.

In the last Assembly elections, the PDP won 28 seats, the BJP won 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference won 15, and the Congress won 12. The PDP and BJP had formed a coalition government, which ended in 2018. These are the first assembly elections in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370.

Abrogation of Article 370 -: Abrogation of Article 370 means the removal of a special status given to Jammu and Kashmir, which happened in August 2019.
