BJP Requests Change in Uttar Pradesh By-Election Date

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked the Election Commission to reschedule the by-election in Uttar Pradesh from November 13 to November 20, 2024. This request is due to the Kartik Purnima festival, which is significant in the region and may affect voter turnout. The festival is on November 15, and people gather in places like Kundarki, Meerapur, Ghaziabad, and Prayagraj days before.

By-Elections Announcement

On October 15, the Election Commission announced bypolls for 48 assembly constituencies, including nine in Uttar Pradesh and the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. Although there are 10 vacant seats in Uttar Pradesh, bypolls were announced for only nine due to a pending election petition for the Milkipur seat in Ayodhya.

Kartik Purnima, falling on November 15 this year, is a full moon day in the Hindu month of Kartika. It is celebrated as Dev Deepawali and is important in the Vaishnava religion, where Kartik is also known as Damodar month, a name for Lord Krishna.
