BJP Protests Over Death of Sanitation Worker Christopher Joy in Thiruvananthapuram

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a protest march towards the corporation office in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, following the tragic death of sanitation worker Christopher Joy. Joy died while cleaning the Amayizhanjan canal in Thampanoor, Thiruvananthapuram.

The police used water cannons on the BJP workers who were protesting. Joy, a municipal corporation worker, was found dead on July 15 after being missing in the drainage canal for 46 hours.

The Kerala Cabinet has granted Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to Christopher Joy’s mother from the Chief Minister’s Relief Funds. Councillor Rajendran of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation stated that Joy’s body was found behind the Sree Chitra Home at Thakarapparambu.

Two corporation workers, Rajeev and Manoj, confirmed the identity of the body. They found the body between Uppalamoodu and Thakarapparambu, likely swept away by heavy rains.

Rescue operations involved the Fire Force, National Disaster Response Force, and the Indian Navy. Scuba divers and a robot with a camera were deployed, but the rescue was hampered by solid waste in the canal. Joy’s body was retrieved after 46 hours.

Christopher Joy, 42, was hired by Southern Railways to clean the canal near Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station. On July 16, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan visited and consoled Joy’s family.
